Local photographer wins spot in photo contest final

A local Invermere resident has been chosen as a finalist for the province-wide “Your Best Shot” photo contest.

A local Invermere resident has been chosen as a finalist for the province-wide “Your Best Shot” photo contest.

This year, the contest run by Abbotsford News (a Black Press sister paper of The Valley Echo) in just its second year, attracted more than 2,000 amateur entries from across B.C., which have been whittled down to 75 finalists. Invermere photographer Amanda Hailey Ross is among them, thanks to her shot, “Butterfly on the Hound Box”.

“The composition was really done well,” said Abbotsford News pre-press manager Harvey Toews, speaking of the photo Ms. Ross took. “The placement of the butterfly in the photo, the use of depth of field were both quite good. The context is there, with the background blurred, but the butterfly sharp. The rule of thirds was put into play.”

Ms. Ross and the other 74 finalists are invited to the contest’s final round at the Abbotsford International Airshow, which runs Friday, August 8th to Sunday, August 10th, where each photographer will shoot photos for four categories — in-the-air photos, ground or static photos, crowd photos and wild card photos.

“This year the contest had entrants stretching from the Lower Mainland out to the Kootenay region — it was a huge spread. It’s really good to see involvement of the whole spectrum of the province,” said Mr. Toews, adding the photos have been getting a huge number of hits online.

Last year’s final contest winner received $1,000 in gift certificate prizes.

The “Your Best Shot” photo contest recently took first place in the Best Contest category in the North American Local Media Association Awards.
