Lake Windermere Ambassadors welcomes new program coordinator

Thea Rodgers will be monitoring lake health this summer on Lake Windermere.

The Lake Windermere Ambassadors Pulse Check has started up again for the summer season.

As the new season gets underway, the Ambassadors welcomed a new program coordinator to the team. Thea Rodgers is heading up the community-based water monitoring program in the wake of outgoing coordinator, Megan Peloso.

Rodgers has a background in Applied Biology, a passion for watershed health, and joins us from the nearby town of Fort Steele, BC.

“It was a beautiful morning on the lake. We had blue skies, low northerly winds, and witnessed a female duck swimming past with two ducklings on her back,” said Rodgers. “It was great to be out getting our hands wet, and very interesting to see the first sampling results of the season.”

Big thanks to Danny Osborne, long-time volunteer for the Lake Windermere Ambassadors, who generously offered his vessel for the first water sampling event of 2017.

Noteworthy results included lake depth, measuring 7.2 metres at the North station of Lake Windermere, confirming that water levels are higher than past years for early June. Cloudiness in the water was most noticeable in the South end, with a very high turbidity measurement of 24.4 NTU.

The Lake Windermere Ambassadors are a group of committed citizens whose mandate is the protection of Lake Windermere, British Columbia. The Ambassadors have a vision of an ecologically healthy Lake Windermere with balanced management approaches that support recreation and traditional uses, high fish and wildlife values, and economic prosperity in the region.
