School zone patrols are back

Columbia Valley RCMP detachment staff sergeant Marko Shehovac's RCMP report for the week of September 14.

School patrols

With school starting up for the 2011/12 season, police will once again concentrate patrols in the school zones. Many new kids will be strutting their independence and start walking to school. Please keep this in mind. Stay off the phones and don’t worry about the makeup while driving. You’re all looking good.

September 2

• Columbia Valley detachment received a complaint of six boat sheds being broken into in the Lower Lake View Lane area.  Dead locks were cut off.  Nothing was observed to be missing.  Fuel was believed to have been stolen.

September 3

• An attempted theft from a GMC Yukon vehicle was reported in the area of 5100 block of Riverside Close in Fairmont.  The vehicle was gone through but nothing indicated stolen.

• Columbia Valley detachment received a complaint of vandalism done to the washroom at Riverside Golf Course.  Anyone with information is requested to contact the detachment.

• Two gliders collided in midair over the Mount Swansea area. The gliders were found within 100 metres of each other. Two males each flying a glider at the time were deceased.

The pilots have been identified as Keith Watson age 50 from Calgary and Ray Perino age 64 from Kelowna. Both are described as experienced pilots and familiar with the area. The Transportation Safety Board is assisting. Our thanks to the many people who were able to provide valuable information to the investigators and who also were first on scene to do the best they could for the pilots.
