Shake up your karma at dance workshop

Are you looking for a way to express your feminine side? Do you want a fun way to stay active and build strength through movement? Have you ever wanted to try belly dancing?

Are you looking for a way to express your feminine side? Do you want a fun way to stay active and build strength through movement? Have you ever wanted to try belly dancing? This is your chance.

This Saturday, October 22, there will be a Karma Dance Event at the new Desiderata Health and Wellness studio (below Chisel Peak Medical Centre). This workshop, suitable for beginners and children, will introduce two different forms of this ancient art.

The traditional middle eastern style will be taught by Sadira, and the more modern tribal fusion style by Dolunay. Both instructors are members of the Arabian Mountain Spice dance troupe. The suggested donation for this event is $10, with proceeds going to the Because I am a Girl Foundation. The foundation raises money to support projects to better the life of women and girls in the developing world, including business skills education, school building, scholarships and training opportunities.

The workshop is from 3 until 5 p.m. There is no preregistration — please just show up with your sense of fun and an open mind.

The workshop will include a warm-up, will go through some simple movements and drills, culminating in some dance combos and will finish off with a stretch and cool-down.

Everyone is  welcome: all shapes, sizes, ages and fitness levels.

After a fun day of shaking things up (literally!), join the two instructors, the rest of the Arabian Mountain Spice troupe and some of their special guests for an evening performance at Pynelogs Cultural Centre. The show begins at 7 p.m., with tickets available at the door for $15. Proceeds from the performance will also go towards Because I am a Girl.

This Saturday get in touch with your inner dancer. Grab a couple of friends, find a scarf to tie around your hips, and get shimmying.
